Description:
Get free energy-saving advice and equipment if you’re a low-income household (to qualify you must pay your energy bills directly).
Teams of two – a counsellor who is a social worker and a technician – visit a household, usually in an older, energy-inefficient building. Each visit lasts about an hour and a half. It applies to all types of energy consumption including electricity, gas and oil. The counsellor offers tips on reducing energy costs, such as maintaining a steady temperature in the home instead of raising and lowering the thermostat. The counsellor is also trained to make referrals to the local community and health centre and to organizations involved in tenant matters or consumer credit and education. The technician may install weather-stripping, caulking, or a more efficient showerhead.
There is no charge for the service. The agency pays $250 per visit to the mandated organizations.
