Efficiency PEI Rebates (2018): Seven Free Money Programs for PEI Homeowners

If you live in Prince Edward Island, you need to check out these Efficiency PEI rebates! There are seven incentives offered by Efficiency PEI, including rebates, financial assistance, an in-kind help.

Here’s a summary of the 7 energy efficiency programs (see below for detailed descriptions and how to apply):

Building Envelope Upgrade Rebate (Also Known as Home Insulation Rebate)

Building Envelope Upgrade Rebate

efficiencyPEI offers money for placing appropriate insulation, air fixing upgrades and ENERGY STAR® windows and entryways. Improvements to the basic foundation of a house (known as a building envelope) can yield a reduction in heating expenses by safeguarding from outside components.

A home energy assessment is compulsory to apply for this program. It gives valuable data about your home’s vitality that will enable you to make educated choices while working, revamping or acquiring a home.

Picking the correct materials will save the most energy, and bring down your monthly costs. The Home Energy Assessment is offered at a reduced rate of $99 plus HST.

Please check the following steps to obtain your rebate:

  • Schedule an appointment with HomeSol Building Solutions (link is external) at 1-855-489-5305 or email to [email protected] HomeSol is the efficiency partner.
  • Complete the upgrades after receiving your EnerGuide Rating System report. Then, contact HomeSol again for a post inspection.
  • Send everything off with your original paid receipt(s) for the renovations, along with proof of income (if needed) to efficiencyPEI address or any Access PEI locations.

Commercial Energy Audit Program

Commercial Energy Audit Program

The efficiencyPEI Commercial Energy Audit Program gives monetary compensation towards an assessment to decide the potential for enhancing energy efficiency in business properties. Certain buildings may qualify as mentioned below.

It is suggested to fill out the application form before the audit: Commercial Energy Audit Program application form.

The following terms apply to this program:

  • You should provide at least 12 months of past utility data for your building (36 months preferred)
  • The energy audit must be conducted by an energy management service provider registered with Natural Resources Canada.
  • You should consent to allow efficiency PEI authorities to get to future utility information upon written consent.

Eligible Buildings include the following:

  • retail buildings
  • grocery stores
  • hotels
  • municipal buildings
  • restaurants
  • grocery stores
  • recreational facilities
  • office buildings
  • community halls
  • churches
  • large multi-unit residential buildings (600 square metres or greater)

Funding for 25 per cent of the cost of an energy audit to control potential energy efficiency improvements (up to a maximum of $500).

  • Ensure the energy management service provider send the extensive energy audit (including a minimum of 12 months of past utility data) to efficiencyPEI.
  • Submit a copy of the paid invoice.

It is also useful to note that cost to hire an energy management service provider will depend on the building size, type and complexity.

  • Complete the application form
  • Prepare all the dated sales receipt showing where unit was purchased including make and model numbers of unit installed;
  • Send your form with original copies of dated receipt(s) and proof of income* (if needed) to the efficiencyPEI address.

PEI Heat Pump Rebate is an incentive program available to any property owners looking to reduce their electric and utility bill.

The following are required to apply:

  • Confirm that you are eligible (check the terms and conditions)?
  • Fill out the application form completely as incomplete information will delay or disqualify.
  • Put all the dated sales receipts together that shows where the unit was bought along with the make and model numbers of the one installed;
  • Send the rebate request with unique duplicates of dated receipt(s) and your latest Maritime Electric Bill to efficiencyPEI.

Please ensure the following before mailing:

  • Original dated sales receipt are marked paid in full and signed by a contractor
  • Electric bill or the Utility statement is showing consumption history for the last 12 months
  • Original GST statement is included if household income is below $35,000/year
  • Rental agreement is included if the property is used as a rental.
  • Vendor Information must be complete with banking info or voided check.

In addition, they should also check the warranty and reliability information of the equipment as it can be quite expensive.

Finally, they should pick the right contractor who would install the equipment adequately and help apply for the rebate.

The PEI Heat Pump rebate is ongoing at the moment and only applies to the residential sector.

Home Energy Audit Program

This program is a gateway to home insulation rebates. The home evaluation energy audit aims to assist homeowners to become more energy efficient.

HomeSol Building Solutions conducts the evaluation for a flat fee of $99 +HST. You can schedule an appointment with the company directly and the grant will be removed in the beginning.

Steps to access the program:

  • Schedule an appointment directly with HomeSol Building Solutions to reserve your home evaluation spot. A flat fee of $99 + HST will be charged.

Home Energy Low-Income Help Program (HELP)

Home Energy Low-Income Help Program (HELP)

efficiencyPEI wants everyone to benefit from the energy efficiency programs despite income constraints. Customers with low income who have applied for the PEI Energy Efficiency Loan or Grant Programs are qualified to have a HELP tradesperson perform a thorough air-sealing on doors and windows for free as well as obtain other free features.

Those who wish to qualify must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a resident of PEI with a total household income of $50,000 or under;
  • Must own and live in the residence or pay the total heating costs (if renting)
  • The property must be your primary residence or a year-round rental property

A HELP tradesperson completes an all-inclusive air-sealing for free at your dwelling along with the following:

  • installation of a programmable thermostat
  • a low-flow showerhead
  • a quantity of ENERGY STAR® LED light bulbs
  • a voucher for a free furnace cleaning (up to $80 value)

Estimate on savings:

Small steps can definitely add up on the heat loss from home, thereby improving savings. The results will depends based on the size of your home, the current condition, and the type of heating system being used.

  • Installing a programmable thermostat can save up to $250 per year.
  • Sealing air leaks with caulking and weather-stripping on windows and doors, sealing electrical outlets and weather-stripping an attic hatch can save almost $650 per year.

  • Confirm your eligibility according to the terms and conditions as outlined on the application form.
  • Fill out the application form completely. Incomplete information will delay or disqualify your application.
  • Mail or drop off the application with original copies of your proof of income* and your most recent Maritime Electric bill to efficiencyPEI or any Access PEI location.

New Home Construction Program

This program helps residents to make their new homes with very energy efficient equipment.

Reasons to build your new home efficiently:

  • Reduces costs to run
  • An energy efficient home required less power to warm (or cool) and reduces month service bills. Having a far reaching designs assessment done before you assemble your home enables you to utilize the most cost effective options to reduce your energy consumption and minimize construction costs.
  • Increase comfort level
  • An energy efficient home has less drafts and temperature fluctuations, and has enhanced indoor air quality. It makes staying home quite charming.
  • Lower impact on the environment
  • Cutting down on energy used to heat and operate your home means less pollution in the environment.

Here’s how the program works:

  • A certified Energy Advisor will review your idea before construction.
  • You will get personalized plans to improve the energy efficiency of your plan and involve your builder appropriately.
  • You are able to receive up to $5,000 in rebates depending on the efficiency.

An EnerGuide rating will be given to your home informing you (and potential buyers) that your home is very convenient.

efficiencyPEI subsidizes more than 80% of the cost of evaluating the building plans  and post assessment. Hence, it only costs $99 + HST.

Rebate

After having your plans reviewed and building your home, a follow-up assessment will be conducted to determine its efficiency. You will be qualified for two types of reimbursements depending on the efficiency standard acheived. Certification can be pursued through ENERGY STAR®, R2000, or by the EnerGuide Rating System.

  • The certified energy advisor will conduct a post assessment within 12 months of your application approval date.
  • Either the homeowner or the builder can register the home. The homeowner will receive the rebate unless requested the builder to obtain payment.
