  • Renters who spend more than 30% of their household income on rent before taxes; and
  • Homeowners spend more than half of their pre-tax household income on home expenses.

Renters’ benefits vary depending on their household size, income, and area average market rentals. Monthly payments of up to $200 are available to homeowners.

This programme provides low-interest loans for expansions or renovations to existing single-family houses, making housing more accessible for older family members.

The maximum loan amount is $25,000, with a maximum repayment period of ten years. At the moment of approval, the interest rate is determined. The repayment duration is limited to six years if a chattel mortgage is utilized to secure the loan.

To be considered for this programme, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. You must own and reside in the property you wish to refurbish.
  2. You’ll need a decent credit score.
  3. The senior must be at least 50 years old.
  4. Your total household income falls below the established income limit, which varies by household size and location.
  5. A bedroom (minimum of 120 sq. ft.) and closet space must be included in the additions/renovations. Bathrooms and kitchens are optional; however, they must be easily accessible if they are not included.

  • The applicant’s credit rating is satisfactory.
