Building Improvements

Arctic Energy Alliance provides rebates to building owners for the installation of energy-saving improvements. The Arctic Energy Alliance also offers free energy audits to help residents identify ways they can save energy. In addition, the organization hosts workshops and training sessions throughout the year to help people learn about energy efficiency and how to make changes in their homes that will reduce energy wastage.

The state of Oregon offers a rebate program, which is supported by the arctic energy alliance and other companies, that gives incentives to homeowners who install new windows or insulation in their homes or businesses. Consumers are also offered rebates on items such as efficient water heaters, appliances, furnaces, and boilers. These opportunities provide an opportunity for consumers to save money on their utility bills while making good choices for the environment. Rebate programs like these not only help you save money but also make your home more comfortable and safer from energy loss during cold winter months when many households face high heating costs. The cost savings from these improvements can be significant, oftentimes covering the entire cost of the improvement over time.

If you are thinking about making any building improvements, we encourage you to check out our rebate program and see how much you could save. We also offer a variety of financing options to make these improvements more affordable. To learn more, please contact our office.

The Arctic Energy Alliance also offers other programs in addition to rebates for home improvement projects. These programs include:

  • A low-interest loan program to help with the costs of energy efficiency upgrades;
  • A weatherization assistance program to help low-income households make their homes more energy efficient; and
  • An education and outreach program to provide information on energy efficiency and conservation to residents of the Arctic Slope.

The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) has energy expertise and funds to assist your company, non-profit, or local government in conserving energy and improving efficiency. This program is for you if you want to save money by reducing the quantity of heating fuel, energy, and water you use, as well as minimizing your greenhouse gas emissions.

The Rebates

Existing Buildings

The AEA offers up to $50,000 in incentives for energy upgrades. The amount of your rebate will be the lesser of:

  • 50 percent of your project’s total eligible costs
  • A cost-benefit analysis based on the amount of money and greenhouse emissions saved by your project (see the program guidelines for more information)

Before you spend any money, the AEA staff can help you calculate what your rebate will be. The AEA issues rebate cheques for eligible expenses after the building modifications are finished, installations are confirmed, and copies of invoices and receipts are received. Rebates are given out on a first-come, first-served basis and are contingent on pre-approval and funds availability.

Construction of New Structures

The AEA is experimenting with offering subsidies to enterprises that build new, energy-efficient facilities. For meeting particular energy-saving targets, you can receive a reimbursement of $65 per square meter of floor area, up to $50,000. We may also offer a free consultation to assist you in making your building more energy-efficient.

Once construction is complete, the AEA issues rebates, which are given on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to pre-approval and funds availability.

This pilot project is not open to local governments or non-profit groups. For more information, download and read the entire project guidelines below.

How Does It Work?

Construction of New Structures

First Steps

This discussion will assist you in deciding whether to have a desktop energy audit performed or simply submit receipts, which is a much simpler process. A desktop audit can assist you in determining whether a free on-site energy audit is necessary. After that, you’ll finish your papers and send them to us.

Any building you want to update must have either a desktop energy audit or an on-site energy audit done. If the building’s energy audit has not yet been conducted, please contact us to begin the process. After your audit is completed, you can complete and submit your refund pre-approval application to us.

Savings Investigations

If you want to investigate potential savings before starting an energy upgrade project, the AEA can analyze your utility bills to see where energy savings might be possible. (This is called a yardstick energy audit.)

If you would like to go even further, an AEA energy advisor can then meet with you at your building and audit your building’s heating equipment and controls, ventilation equipment and controls, air leakage, equipment that uses water, and your building’s lighting and lighting controls, and let you know how to get the most energy savings for the least amount of money. You can then use the audit report to help you decide what work you want to do.

Estimates of Costs

Once you’ve decided on the type of building upgrades you desire, you’ll need to Calculate the cost of the upgrades and work with your energy advisor to complete a rebate pre-approval form. (A rebate can only be guaranteed if your application has been pre-approved before you begin the work.)

Once the work is completed, we’ll let you know what kind of rebate you can expect. Within three months of receiving pre-approval, begin working on your project. To qualify for a refund, community governments must complete a yardstick audit or a similar professional energy assessment.

Community governments can pay the AEA for project coordinating services to assist them in executing the recommendations in the targeted energy audit reports, but you can also earn a $10,000 subsidy.

Receive Rebates

We can compute your rebate once you deliver all of your receipts and other information to the AEA. We can conduct a free follow-up yardstick energy audit one year after you’ve performed your energy upgrades so you can see your energy and money savings. If you already know what energy upgrades you want to do, how much they’ll cost, and how much energy, water, and money you’ll save, contact us to pre-approve the changes, then send us a copy of all your receipts to process your rebate.
