- It must make use of a unique, urgent opportunity or partnership to warrant consideration of the project outside of the standard pan-Canadian competitive review process.
- For the funding of the research, the infrastructure, and its operations to be funded quickly, it requires the coordination and financial support of other pertinent agencies.

Insight Development Grants by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
Research in its early stages is supported by insight development grants. The grants make it possible to experiment with new techniques, theoretical frameworks, and/or concepts as well as to develop new research questions. For short-term research development projects that last up to two years and are put forth by individuals or teams, funding is provided.
There are two different categories of scholars who are eligible for funding:
- Young researchers who will create fresh research questions and/or strategies. Such initiatives could expand upon and advance the graduate work of the applicant (or team), as well as carry on their overall research trajectory.
- Scholars with a track record who will investigate novel research questions and/or methodologies that are distinct from the applicant’s prior or ongoing work. Early on in the research process, research projects should have clear boundaries. Perspective Development Grant money isn’t meant to support established scholars’ ongoing research.
Suitable Candidates
- A team of researchers (made up of one applicant and one or more co-applicants and/or collaborators) or a single researcher may submit an application.
- Before funding can be released, applicants (with the exception of postdoctoral researchers and Ph.D. students) must be connected to an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution at the time of application. Researchers who are affiliated with a non-Canadian post-secondary institution on a continuing basis but whose primary affiliation is with a Canadian post-secondary institution are not qualified to apply for applicant status.
- Postdoctoral scientists are qualified to apply for this grant. But before the SSHRC can disburse grant money, successful applicants must formally bind themselves to a Canadian post-secondary institution within three months of the grant’s start date (in this case, by September 2021), and they must keep that affiliation throughout the grant’s duration.
Eligible costs: The following categories of research activities may be included in proposed projects, but they are not restricted to them:
- instance studies pilot projects
- critical evaluations of the available research

Alliance International by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Alliance International will help Canadian researchers establish and grow international research collaborations and projects that have a significant chance of having an impact on NSE disciplines. These collaborations and projects will involve working with top international academic researchers.
Catalyst grants and Collaboration grants are the two types of grants available.
Suitable Candidates: If you are a Canadian university researcher who qualifies for NSERC funding, you can submit an application on your own or in collaboration with other qualified academic researchers. You, along with any Canadian co-applicants, must be the primary applicant on an ongoing NSERC peer-reviewed grant at the time of application. This funding opportunity does not require the participation of or financial support from partner organizations.
Eligible costs
- Grants from Alliance International Catalyst
To assist Canadian researchers in starting international research collaborations in the NSE disciplines, catalyst grants will provide funding for one year. With the help of these grants, Canadian researchers will be able to identify and begin the initial phase of collaboration with the aim of
- supporting exploratory research initiatives and, when necessary, launching exchanges for Canadian personnel
- Grants for Alliance International Collaboration
With the aid of collaboration grants, Canadian researchers will be able to take part in international projects and benefit from the best global expertise in NSE disciplines to address pressing research issues that will help Canada. This pays for the costs associated with taking part in the large-scale project.
