Small firms that deal in imports and exports may be eligible for government grants to help them expand their company under certain grant programmes that are available for exporting. They assist Canadian small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in working on joint R&D projects with a foreign organisation. Brazil, China, India, Israel, and South Korea are among the markets where their finance is available for projects.

Close to commercialization R&D projects are supported by CIIP financing, including the following:

  • Projects that enable already-commercialized items be modified to fit a new market are known as technology adaptation projects. This market may be domestic or international.
  • Projects involving new products that have not yet reached the market are known as technology validation projects. Technical and commercial validation of the product must come from potential early adopter consumers.

  • possess a superior, distinguishable, and protectable technology that may already be commercialised in Canada,
  • are incorporated, profit-driven, small and medium-sized businesses with up to 500 full-time equivalent employees who are prepared to collaborate with a foreign partner in one of the countries mentioned above who are looking to commercialise new or improved products, services, or processes.

Partnership Development Activities (PDA) – Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP)

PDAs (Partnership Development Activities) are activities for networking, education, and matchmaking. Their PDAs are made to make joint research and development (R&D) projects between Canadian businesses and international partners easier.

Suitable Candidates: This programme is available to Canadian businesses that:

  • are aiming to commercialise new or enhanced goods, services, or processes and are an incorporated, profit-driven small- to medium-sized business with up to 500 full-time equivalent employees who are prepared to work together on an R&D project with a foreign partner.
  • possess or jointly possess the intellectual property rights to the invention being commercialised; possess the financial means to cover the cost of attending the PDA
  • are not completely supported by Canadian government agencies (federal, provincial, territorial, or municipal or Crown corporations)

The Canada-India Acceleration Program is made to assist business owners in expanding into new markets, developing meaningful relationships, picking up useful skills, and accelerating venture growth.

Creative Export Canada

Creative Export Canada

Projects that create export revenue and aid the global expansion of the Canadian creative industries are eligible for funding from Creative Export Canada.

Due to the program’s intense competition, a small number of projects are funded each year.

Suitable Candidate: In order to be qualified for funding, a business or organisation must:

  • be incorporated under Canadian, provincial, or territorial law;
  • either a for-profit business or a non-profit institution;
  • be controlled by and owned by Canadians;
  • have annual revenues that are no more than $500M; and
  • have a least one full-time worker.

Only cash outlays for linked projects are acceptable, and these could include:

  • acquisition of digital or other technologies,
  • professional services, or the portion of employees’ salaries specifically related to the project;
  • travel-related costs, which must be directly related to the project and must not exceed the rates permitted for travel on government business, in accordance with the National Joint Council Travel Directive; marketing costs;
  • and project-related administrative costs (such as general office supplies, mailing, and cloud storage costs), limousine costs; and other incidentals.

Application submission is currently closed for project expenses beginning between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022. The deadline for applications is September 29, 2021, and it applies to projects with costs accruing between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

Export Readiness Micro-Voucher Program | Alberta Innovates

Export Readiness Micro-Voucher Program

The Alberta Export Expansion Package (AEEP), put forth by the government of Alberta’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (EDT), includes the Export Readiness Micro-Voucher Program (the “Program”). The Program has been created to offer a relatively rapid and adaptable financial solution to enable Alberta Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) that are thinking about entering new foreign markets by offsetting the cost of getting a professional market assessment. The EDT provides funding for the programme, which is run by Alberta Innovates.

Suitable candidates:

An SME must fulfil the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

  • be a for-profit Alberta SME; have at least $20,000 in sales in the current or prior fiscal year; have a physical presence in Alberta; have fewer than 500 full-time employees and less than $50,000,000 in annual gross revenue; be a legal entity; be in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates and its affiliates InnoTech Alberta and C-Fer Technologies; and

Criteria for Service Provider Eligibility:

  • Provide the service(s) and/or product(s) at reasonable market rates; provide a detailed Statement of Work; be a legal entity; be legally permitted to enter, remain in, and perform the services in Canada during the Project Term; and be in good financial standing with Alberta Innovates and its subsidiaries InnoTech Alberta and C-Fer Technologies. Criteria for Project Eligibility:

  • expand export research to other jurisdictions, show a clear path to export and market expansion, and be finished by March 31, 2021; be accepted by Alberta Innovates and Alberta Economic Development Trade and Tourism, as well as meeting any additional requirements that Alberta Innovates may periodically establish.

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Alberta who want to expand into foreign markets can apply for up to $10,000 in funding to help cover the cost of hiring a service provider to help with the creation of export-related strategies like:

  • Market entry tactics or an export strategy
  • Legal counsel (patent protection support)
  • Accounting guidance (taxes)
  • Advice on tariffs, certification standards, or laws
  • pricing approach for exports
  • Logistics and distribution
  • Plan for global marketing
  • translation assistance (to translate user manuals, product guides etc.)

The programme is designed to assist SMEs in matching their worldwide strategies with global prospects and assessing the advantages and disadvantages of exporting before entering new international markets.

Startup Global

A network of partners committed to their success unites a pan-Canadian cohort of entrepreneurs looking to launch international firms with Startup Global (previously the Canadian Export Challenge).

Startup Global helps business owners expand internationally. Through seminars, bootcamps, pitch building, advisory help, digital resources, and more—all packaged in an accessible and user-friendly portal—we offer exposure to the global market and exporting.

Eligible costs: One pitch competition for startups and one for scale-ups are held by Startup Global.

In the semi-finals, the top 50 from each competition will have the chance to pitch for a chance to earn $2,500 (for startups) and $5,000 (for scale-ups).

The top 5 scale-ups and startups will advance to the October Startup Global Grand Finale. They will compete one more there for the chance to win up to $100,000 in assistance and up to $25,000 in cash.
