Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program

Province/Territory: Ontario

Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000

Description: Get a matching grant (up to $5,000) when you do home improvements to make your home more energy efficient. The provincial Home Energy Retrofit program will match the rebate you get from the federal ecoENERGY Retrofit program (link). This means you can get up to $10,000 back on home improvements. Examples of home improvements that will get you rebates include:

  • Replacing your furnace, air conditioner, and/or water heater with a more efficient one
  • Insulating your home
  • Replacing the windows
  • Replacing your toilet(s)
  • Sealing air leaks around windows and doors

Steps to Get This Rebate:

  1. Get a licensed home energy advisor to do an energy audit on your home. Licensed energy advisors can be found here
  2. Do the renovations
  3. Have another energy evaluation done. (This is the after-renovation evaluation, which is done to see how much more energy-efficient your house is).
  4. Your energy advisor will notify Natural Resources Canada (the government department that runs the ecoENERGY Retrofit program)
  5. Natural Resources Canada will notify the Ontario government
  6. Both Natural Resources Canada and the Ontario government will mail you a rebate cheque(!)

When the Rebate Ends:

Gentlemen: My Husband and I own a home in Windsor, Ontario. We are c;urrently renting this home to our Son. It is very poorly insulated. Can we get a Grant to reinsulate and have an EcoEnergy assessment done. How would we go about this process?

  2. Mark Says:

    Hello Julie,

Thanks for your question. Here’s what you should do:

    (1) First visit our ecoENERGY Retrofit page, and take a look at the steps involved in getting the ecoENERGY grant (don’t worry, there aren’t many steps!).

Insulation is one of the home improvements that is covered under the ecoENERGY grant program, but keep in mind that the more improvements you make to your home, the more grant money you can get back.

    (2) Read our Two-Minute Guide to the ecoENERGY Retrofit program for a quick breakdown of other home improvements that you can do to get a bigger ecoENERGY grant.

    (3) Take a look at the Ontario Home Energy Audit Program, which is a rebate that covers about half the cost of a home energy audit.

Keep in mind that with the matching grant from the province of Ontario, you can get up to $10,000 (total) in grants.

    Hope that helps,

    Mark

Spread out over a couple of years, we have done many renovations to our properties ie – furnace, windows, insulation, etc. We have also changed the roofing. However, we didn’t know of the grants program at that time. While we have lost the opportunity to get the maximum grant that we could have availed, is there a way to still get some tax credit/rebate for the improvements that we have done? That may mean that we have to refile our income tax.
Is there a possibility yet to get some tax rebate for the renovations that we did?
Your response would be most appreciated.

    Hi May,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, just about all of the government rebates that are worth applying for require a pre-renovation energy audit of your home. There are no programs that I’m aware of that allow you to apply for rebates retroactively.

All these programs are good. But i think this is just a tax grab to get more, or at least a bit of green out of comsumers. Home owners who have self identified and have done thier own renovations should get a rebate without the audit. Just show your receipts for goods purchased.
I have done renos on my own home, and find it rather bothersome to even apply for programs like this. because we will just get the run around in the end…and spend more $$$ on audits.
I will see the results when my heating/cooling bills drop 20-30%. This government does not make it easy…my 2 cents worth.

    Thanks,
    Ben

If I avail of these programs, will the renovations still qualify for the recent renovation tax credit announced by the gov’t? If so, will one of them (CRA or Ontario prov) accept photocopies of the receipts since both require these for availing of their programs?
